Julkisen taiteen merkitys oppimisympäristöissä
Julkinen taide oppimisympäristössä
Julkinen taide on merkittävä osa nykyaikaista oppimisympäristöä.
The Role of Public Art in Learning Environments
Public Art as Part of Learning
Public art is an essential part of contemporary learning environments. It is not merely a visual addition, but a means of strengthening local identity, increasing well-being, and supporting learning on multiple levels.
An ideal learning environment is built upon three complementary layers of art:
Permanent Works
Long-lasting artworks become anchored in their surroundings and function as markers of identity. They create durable points of reference for memory and strengthen both local identity and the recognizability of the environment.
Participatory Art
Participatory art fosters a sense of ownership and increases comfort and feelings of safety. It also offers opportunities to expand teaching practices and community-based activities, and may help to reduce vandalism.
Time‑Based Art
Art that is time-based and temporary responds to changing phenomena and users. It maintains relevance as users of the space change, enables participatory projects, and creates employment opportunities for artists.
A learning environment is not only a built space — it can also be an experience, an event, or an encounter.
Public art shapes attitudes, nurtures growth, and supports learning as part of everyday environments.
"Arkisen muiston siirtäminen materiaaliin luo tilan keskustelulle, jota käyn ympäriltäni löytämillä muistin palasilla. Taiteen avulla yritän ymmärtää muistojen merkitystä nykyisyyden ja tulevaisuuden muokkaajana sekä pyrin hahmottamaan valtarakenteiden heijastumia arkisissa tallenteissa."
"Unohdetut ja katoavat"-muistipeli

Identity is created through memories, but what is remembered, who remembers, how it is remembered, and where memories are stored. Today, the largest collective memory consists of digital recordings, but are these really the things that are wanted to be preserved?
The aim is to challenge the viewer to test the limits of their own perception and to evoke reflection on the significance of remembering. “Forgotten and Disappearing” is an interactive sculpture that functions on the principle of a memory game. The imagery of the work depicts everyday things that have been forgotten or are disappearing.
The work can be played like a memory game, but it must be handled with respect. The pieces are unique, hand-drawn charcoal drawings on wooden boards. Every game leaves traces of memory on the pieces, and in the end, every player and every game is recorded in the memory of the artwork.

Conversation 2023
The artwork Conversation, located in the lobby of Nurmijärvi Main Library, is inspired by old photographs and stories from the past. The stories told by the photographs have been transformed into a visual conversation in which the narrator can be anyone. The blurred personalities of the characters make the paintings universal and easy to relate to.
The combination of charcoal drawing and painting on wooden panels fits the built environment in terms of both materials and colours. The slight three-dimensionality of the paintings is a reminder of the surrounding books and their stories.

Suunnannäyttäjä 2002
The sculpture Suunnannäyttäjä (The Pathfinder), located in Wahren Park in Forssa, was unveiled in 2002. The project originated from a private initiative and was realized as a direct commission in cooperation with the City of Forssa.
The sculpture consists of three totem-like figures carved from larch wood, standing on top of a stone turtle. The larch trees were sourced from trees felled in the City of Forssa's own parks, and the stones were selected from the municipality's maintenance depot and arranged into a turtle-like form.
The artwork's multicultural symbolism invites viewers to reflect on the world with openness and tolerance. Through its materials, the piece also reflects Finnish building traditions and mythologies.
Over time, Suunnannäyttäjä has developed a natural patina, as nature brings life to the surface of the sculpture while simultaneously demonstrating its own power.
